Cambridgeshire Deaf Association has teamed up with local charity Boxing Futures to provide boxing sessions that are fully accessible in British Sign Language (BSL) for the Deaf community.
The sessions have now been running for two months and have attracted a regular group of committed boxers. With expert coaching from the team at Boxing Futures and full accessibility in sign language, these are among the first sessions of their kind in our area. Accessible boxing opportunities for Deaf people remain incredibly rare across the UK, making this another great step forward for local Deaf people and the wider community.
The sessions take place at:
Boxing Futures
Unit 12, Crusader Court
Harrier Way
Eagle Business Park
Yaxley
Peterborough
PE7 3PU
The cost is just £5 per session, making them an affordable way to keep fit, meet new people and learn new skills.
Boxing has many benefits. It helps develop strength and conditioning, improves cardiovascular fitness and provides a great way to relieve stress after a busy week.
For many Deaf people, traditional boxing gyms can feel off-limits because so much relies on hearing timers, instructions and coaching. However, boxing is actually a very visual sport. Learning combinations, footwork and movement lends itself well to visual communication. With experienced coaches who understand how to adapt their coaching and BSL support throughout the sessions, Boxing Futures has created an environment where Deaf people can take part with confidence.
Andrew Palmer, Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire Deaf Association, said:
“We’re so delighted to be working with Boxing Futures on this project. They’re an amazing organisation that has spent many years bringing the benefits of boxing to the local community, especially to people with disabilities and others who might not normally have the opportunity to take part in sport.
“It’s fantastic to be working together, and I know the members of our community who have been coming along absolutely love the sessions. We’ve already built a loyal group of regular boxers who enjoy getting fit, learning new skills and letting off a bit of steam at the end of the week.”
The sessions take place every other Friday at 6.00pm.
