The Autumn edition of Tuned In, our Hearing Help newsletter, is out now — and it comes with good news for Ramsey. From 17 September, the town gets its own Hearing Help drop-in, offering free NHS hearing aid maintenance, batteries, information and advice.

New: Hearing Help comes to Ramsey

Our newest session will offer free NHS hearing aid maintenance — including cleaning and retubing — along with batteries, basic repairs, information and advice.

  • Where: Jones Court, Great Whyte, Ramsey, PE26 1HW
  • When: 3rd Thursday, quarterly, 9:30am – 11am
  • First session: Thursday 17 September 2026

Lipreading classes are back in Cambridge

Our Cambridge lipreading classes return this September, and there is still time to join. They offer a friendly, relaxed environment to develop lipreading skills, build confidence and meet other people with hearing loss.

  • Mondays: 21 September to 30 November, 2:15pm – 3:15pm
  • Thursdays: 24 September to 3 December, 12:15pm – 1:15pm
  • Where: St Andrew’s Street Baptist Church, Cambridge CB2 3AR
  • Cost: £50 for the term

Things our volunteers wish you knew

Our volunteers maintain thousands of hearing aids every year. This issue, they shared a few things they wish everyone knew:

  • Don’t wait until your tubing is rock hard. Old, stiff tubing affects how your hearing aid works. We can replace it before it becomes a problem.
  • Bring both hearing aids. Even if only one is playing up, we can check both while you are here.
  • Keep the broken bits. If a hook or dome has broken or fallen off, bring it — it helps us work out exactly what replacement you need.
  • It might not be your hearing aid. If everything looks fine but you are still struggling to hear, it could be wax or a change in your hearing. We will let you know if it is time to contact your GP or Audiology.
  • Please don’t wrap them in tissues. Hearing aids wrapped in tissues have a terrible habit of ending up in the bin. Keep them in their case instead.

And you do not need to wait for something to break — you are always welcome to pop in for routine maintenance or advice. As our volunteers put it: if in doubt, bring it along.

Two changes to note

Wisbech is moving. From October, the Wisbech drop-in moves to St Peters Church Hall, Church Terrace, PE13 1BW. Same team, same free service — please make a note of the new location before your next visit.

December closures. Cambridge Meadows, Huntingdon, Melbourn, St Neots, Whittlesey and Waterbeach will not be running in December. Please plan ahead for any batteries or maintenance you need before the festive break.

A busy summer

Writing in this issue, Service Manager Riley reports that across June and July alone the Hearing Help team supported more than 1,100 people through community drop-ins, care home sessions, home visits and other support — work made possible by a team of volunteers giving their time across Cambridgeshire.
