Volunteer vacancy: Cochlear Implant Speech Training Mentor

skypeWe’re looking for a volunteer to mentor a male deaf adult who is working to improve his speech since becoming a user of a cochlear implant.

The person in question does not have regular enough access to people who can give him feedback on his speech and would like someone calm to listen and then provide encouragement and constructive feedback during short speech therapy exercises.

This is the first volunteering vacancy of its kind and is a trial to see how successful and rewarding this approach, to what is a common problem, could be.

There is no need to leave the comfort of your own home to fulfill the role as it is intended to be done remotely by Skype or Facetime. The exercises take no more than half-an-hour and can be done at mutually convenient times. Training is provided.

If you’re interested in making a real difference to the life of a deaf person, have an hour-or-so a week to spare and have the patience and temperament required, then please get in touch for more information.

  • Sign Language skills will be useful but not essential.
  • A knowledge of deafness or cochlear implants will also be useful but not essential
  • An internet connection and use of Skype or Facetime are required.
  • Travel expenses to attend training are reimbursed
