The board of Trustees at CDA are asking for members of the deaf community and professionals to join a new Mental Health Sub-committee.

The sub-committee will be asked to make recommendations to the Trustees about how mental health problems in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough can be tackled.

Mental health problems in the deaf community have come to the fore in recent weeks with the suicide of a number of prominent deaf men and the hugely successful fund-raising walk from John O’Groats to Lands End which bought the issue of mental health to a new level in the deaf community.

The board of Trustee are now looking for between 8-10 people to join the committee, which will meet in Peterborough and Huntingdon every 2-months and identify both problems and possible action that public services could take or CDA could seek to do itself.

CDA already has a history of working to tackle mental health problems. We successfully lobbied the local NHS to allow BSL counselling service Sign Health to be commissioned in our area.

Our Support and Advocacy staff have been trained in Mental Health First Aid and we offer ground-breaking courses, such as our Five Ways to Wellbeing and Freedom Programme courses which focus on improving mental health. We also organise hundreds of sports and social events every year.

Despite this a fresh injection of ideas and research into the topic is needed.

If you would like to be considered to join the mental health committee, please apply using the form and we will be back in touch soon.
