Facemarks are now mandatory on public transport and being worn by many people who work in shops and other services. Masks are essential safety items but also a problem for deaf people who read lips as a way to communicate.

The badge helps to make people aware of the communication problems caused by masks and encourages people to find alternative ways to communicate such as using gesture, writing things down, moving behind a screen or providing written communication material. CDA does not advocate for people to remove masks which could increase the risk of spreading the virus.

Order your ‘I am a lip reader’ or ‘I use Sign Language’ badge today for only £1 per badge plus £1 postage and packing. CDA members can receive the badge for free by typing in the coupon code.

Also available is the ‘I am deaf’ card which people can carry in their wallets. Its discreet and can be used whenever necessary. It is made of hard plastic and is the same size of a debit card. So it’s durable.
