Ellh Karlaouzos, our Deaf Awareness Trainer and Befriending Volunteer, spent last week in London competing at the Backgammon World Championships.
The championships bring together some of the strongest players in the world, so reaching that stage is a real achievement. Ellh (pronounced "Elli") also plays with Cambridge Backgammon Club, which meets in Cambridge, Girton and St Neots.
Ellh’s work at CDA
At Cambridgeshire Deaf Association, Ellh delivers our Deaf Awareness Training and volunteers with our Befriending service. She also leads our monthly board games group, and it is her enthusiasm for games that keeps it going.
What is the board games group?
The board games group is a monthly afternoon of games and company. People come to play, to learn something new, or simply to sit with a cup of tea and catch up. It is open to deaf and hard of hearing people from across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and like our other community events it is BSL accessible.
The group meets on the first Wednesday of every month, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, at the Blue Diamond Garden Centre Cafe, Banks End, Wyton, Huntingdon PE28 2AA.
Learn backgammon in October
At the session on Wednesday 7 October, Ellh will be teaching backgammon. If you have never played, this is a good chance to learn the game from someone who has just competed at world level. You do not need any experience.
How to come along
There is no need to book. Just turn up on the day.
The next two sessions are:
- Wednesday 7 October 2026, 1.30pm to 3.30pm
- Wednesday 4 November 2026, 1.30pm to 3.30pm
Both are at the Blue Diamond Garden Centre Cafe, Banks End, Wyton, Huntingdon PE28 2AA.
For more information about the board games group and everything else we run, see the events pages on this website or follow us on social media. And if you know someone who would enjoy an afternoon of games, please pass this on — not everyone sees our posts.
