On Tuesday 6 October, the Mill Road Traders’ Association held an evening workshop in the hall at our Cambridge office on Romsey Terrace, just round the corner from Mill Road.

Traders from along the road came together to share their experiences and talk about what comes next for the street. The association described it as a really positive evening, with strong evidence and honest feedback from the businesses in the room. It is now putting together a full report.

Our Cambridge office at 8 Romsey Terrace sits just off Mill Road, and the building is busy most days of the week. As well as our own staff and volunteers, it is home to Romsey Therapy Rooms, our room-hire service for therapists and practitioners, and to British Sign Language classes run by SignReach in association with CDA. Between the therapists and their clients, sign language learners, our team and the deaf people we support, a lot of people from our building use the shops, cafes and services on Mill Road every week.

The independent businesses on the road are part of what makes this corner of Cambridge a community, and Cambridgeshire Deaf Association is happy to support them.

Our colleague Katie Rustill set up the hall for the evening. The association has since invited CDA along to its next meeting.

Andrew Palmer, Chief Executive of Cambridgeshire Deaf Association, said:

“Mill Road is our high street too. Our Cambridge office is just round the corner, and with our team, the deaf people we support, the therapists using Romsey Therapy Rooms and everyone coming in to learn sign language, there are a lot of people from our building in and out of the shops and cafes on Mill Road. When the traders needed somewhere to meet, Cambridgeshire Deaf Association was really happy to help. Local businesses and local charities do better when we look out for each other, and I’m looking forward to us working more closely with the traders in future.”

Could we help your business?

If you run a shop, cafe or business on Mill Road, we can help you make it more welcoming for deaf and hard of hearing customers. Our deaf awareness training is practical and delivered by deaf trainers.

Our building is also available to hire. The hall suits meetings, workshops and community groups, and Romsey Therapy Rooms offers private rooms for therapists and practitioners. If you would like to learn British Sign Language, find out more on our Learn BSL page, or get in touch.
