Oscar wining film about a young deaf girl is to be screened in Peterborough alongside the latest work from an acclaimed deaf director.
The Silent Child has been making waves both here and in America for the acclaimed performance of its young deaf actress, Maisie Sly, and won best Best Short Film at the Oscars on Sunday night. The film is written by Rachel Shenton who is known for her role in Hollyoaks and for her work with UK deaf charities. Rachel knows and is passionate about British Sign Language and her father was deaf.
The story focuses on Libby, a profoundly deaf four-year-old, who is the youngest child in a family who are all hearing. Unable to communicate but about to start school, Libby is assigned a social worker who teaches her sign language. Libby’s skeptical parents are reluctant to be involved, however, and pose a potential block to Libby’s education.
To Know Him is the latest work by acclaimed director Ted Evans. Ted’s multi-award winning films reflect the experiences of deaf people in imagined realities. Ted’s previous work ‘The End’ and ‘Retreat’ have scooped best film and director awards across the world. Ted was also commissioned to produce two films shown at the opening ceremonies of the London Paralympic Games.
To know him is rated for audiences aged 15 and over
William Mager, Producer of BBC See Hear said after an exclusive screening of To Know Him:
“To Know Him was a beautiful story, beautifully and simply told, beautifully filmed, and just an amazing experience to watch on a big screen. It was one of the best films I’ve seen in a while – and it felt like it transcended deaf filmmaking and became something that tells a universal story which anyone can relate to.”
